Slots and Peeps

I’ve never lived in a place where the front door had a mail slot.  The lazy part of my thinks this would be really cool; having mail delivery right to the floor by the front door.   Never again, having to walk to the mailbox.

Another part of me, never wants someone to trek through rain, sleet and snow to have access to a 3″ x 9″ sliver of my existence.  A Monday through Saturday intrusion, albeit brief intrusion into my place would be too much for me to handle.  Although, the visits would occur on a regular basis on established days, maybe a stable relationship would be comforting.

Would this magical mail door also have a peep hole?  I haven’t had a peep hole door in maybe 15 years.  Unless you count hotel rooms, these days I am more familiar with the other side of the peep hole.   Peep show…another story.

Not sure I really want a mail slot or a peep hole, unless attached with a fab condo in NY, Chicago, SF, Austin, London, just not this town.

    So,
I had a mail slot in SF.

We were given a home-whittled baby cradle by a kind hearted family member that was not safe for an actual baby to occupy. We placed this underneath the mail slot to catch those precious bills.

A necessary side effect of having the mail slot is that you never get to know your mail man. We had a garage sale when we were set to move to Phoenix, and our mail man dropped in on his way to deliver them bills. As it turned out, that guy was awesome. He actually bought an old tube amplifier from us and sat and talked music for a long time.

Who knew he was feet from our door every single day? I suppose a regular mail box doesn’t really provide more opportunity to rock with your mailman though.

    Ahhhh, mail slots.

So, you needed a cradle underneath your mail slot to capture the mail before it hit the floor? Now that is a bit genius and a bit lazy.

I want a relationship with a mail person. Maybe I shouldn’t use a PO Box.
